Parry's Sail To the Baltic
Nida, The Curonian Lagoon
August 10, 2008
Decided to explore the Curonian Lagoon an inland stretch of water which is separated from the Baltic by a long narrow spit of land which stretches from Klaipeda in Lithuania into Kalliningrad, Russia . The lagoon is shallow and the spit consists of shifting sand dunes and pine forests, its one of the must see sights in the Baltic.
We set off for the 25 mile trip to Nida late afternoon. A well marked channel but part of the way the depth sounder was showing 0.1m and occasionally zero. En route the sight of 50 meter sand dunes was amazing looking like a misplaced desert. We managed not to go aground and arrived at 19.00 in Nida harbour, supposedly one of the most fashionable marina’s in Lithuania. We are now only 1 mile from the Russian border of Kalliningrad, about as close as we will get to Russia. We just managed to get a berth and went off to explore the town.
It was lovely place full of brightly coloured fisherman’s cottages. Popular with tourists so plenty going on. We finally settled on an evening meal in a nice outdoor setting, locally caught pikeperch. Finally a coffee and the local liqueur (999) in a bar by the marina.
